Also called Mullein wands, “Hag torches,” etc, are made by dipping Mullein stalks into layers and layers of beeswax.
The use of Mullein stalks as torches goes back ages—no one really knows how far back, but possible as early as the Roman Empire or earlier. Some sources say “witches” would dip the Mullein into tallow and light it.
Each one takes me a long time to create, as I make them in ritual with a lot of intention & love. It’s quite a process—there is beeswax and mica EVERYWHERE after I’ve made a batch.
I hand dip each one in local beeswax before decorating with various ritual plants and mica.
They can be used for any kind of ritual, spellwork, or when you want to mark the significance of something.
People light them on Samhain, when the veil is thinnest, or on birthdays, Solstices, New Years, etc.
I find that using these can amplify your intention—be it connecting with an ancestor or helping spirit, letting something go that no longer serves you, or calling in abundance.
I like to write down my intention on a piece of paper, and use the lit torch to burn the paper.
